How to Make Ghee at Home (Clarified Butter/Butter Oil)

Ingredients:
  • Unsalted Butter
Materials:
  • Stainless steel pot
  • Cheese cloth/strainer
  • Airtight jar
Method:

Slowly melt 4 packs of unsalted butter on low heat in a pot. Before long it will start to simmer and white foam looking stuff will rise to the top.You want to keep skimming that off with a spoon. Continue doing that for a few hours (1-2 hours) and then you will start to notice the butter getting clear. At that point, you should be able to see the bottom of the pot clearly. Thoroughly make sure that there is no more foam.

Now you can leave the pot on the stove for a couple of minutes longer to toast it, but I usually don't do that. Let it cool and then strain the oil through a cheese cloth or strainer into an airtight jar. That's it! You have ghee/clarified butter/butter oil. You can store it on the counter at room temperature or you can put it in the fridge, although you might find it to be an arduous task to get out later since there is no water left.
