How to Make Virgin Coconut Oil

There are two methods for making coconut oil at home. One method uses fermentation and the other requires heat. I have made coconut oil using both of these methods, and from my experience the method that uses heat produced a more palatable oil for consumption.

When the fermentation method was used, the oil had an off smell and taste, so I used that oil for my skin and hair instead. However, I must mention that when I used the fermentation method, it was a very hot summer and I did leave it out unattended for too long and didn't seperate the oil until the 3rd or 4th day so maybe that is why I had those results.

The amount to make will depend on how much oil you want. Milk from one mature coconut usually contains the equivalent of about 3-4 tablespoons of oil, so using 4 coconuts worth of milk will produce approximately 1 cup of oil. I will outline both methods below.

Fermentation Method (Virgin Coconut Oil)

Materials:
  • Glass or non-reactive container/jar with lid (it is optimal to use a wide jar)
  • Airtight Jar

How to Make Coconut Flour

Coconut flour is an excellent alternative to grain-based flours, but it can be costly. I find that it is cheaper to make your own. I made a post on how to make coconut milk. The by-product of producing coconut milk is coconut pulp/or the remaining fibre. That is what is used to make coconut flour.

Ingredients:
  • Coconut pulp(devoid of milk/fat)
Materials:
  • Oven/Dehydrator
  • Baking tray
  • Coffee grinder/Food processor
  • Wax paper
Method:
Take the coconut pulp left from making coconut milk and spread it out on a baking tray lined with wax paper. Put the coconut on the tray that comes with your dehydrator if you are using that.

How to Make Fresh Coconut Milk

Ingredients:

  • Mature coconut
  • Warm/hot water
Materials:
  • Coconut grater(optional)
  • Knife (to crack coconut)
  • Blender/food processor
  • cheese cloth
  • 2 stainless steel bowls
Method:
Crack open the coconut and pour the water from it inside a bowl. Use the coconut grater to grate all the meat out into the bowl. If you do not have a coconut grater, you can use a knife, although an easier method is to put both halves of the coconut in the freezer for a few hours. After it is out of the freezer, the white meat should dislodge out of the shell.
